Don’t Pay to Shop!

Posted on September 25th, 2004 in Mystery Shopper Scam by Cathy Stucker

You see an ad in the newspaper, or get an e-mail promising that you can make lots of money and get all kinds of free stuff as a mystery shopper. All you have to do is sign up with them . . . oh, and pay $29.95, $49.95, $99 or more.

Don’t do it! The places wanting you to pay these fees are not mystery shopping companies and they can’t get you jobs. Most of them simply copy (illegally, in most cases) job listings from company web sites and forums, and pass them along to you.

You can get the same information yourself, without the fee. All you have to know is where to look. Two sites that can help you find mystery shopping companies and job postings are the Mystery Shopping Providers Association and Volition.com. Both sites are reputable and free.

You will also find a list of more than 150 companies hiring mystery shoppers in The Mystery Shopper’s Manual.
