Renee DeSantis, President of GameFilm® Consultants, answered some questions for us about mystery shopping for them, and shared her thoughts on some of the challenges facing shoppers and the mystery shopping industry.
GameFilm® Consultants is headquartered in Austin, TX. The company is a founding member of the Mystery Shopping Providers Association, and Renee is on the board of the MSPA. You may have seen Renee recently in the Good Morning America story on mystery shopping.
GameFilm® Consultants offers a variety of programs to measure the customer experience, including both written (online) and video mystery shopping. They have been in business since 1992, and perform more than 60,000 mystery shops each month, across a variety of industries.

Describe the ideal shopper.
The ideal shopper is someone who can come across as an average customer, without being memorable, they have the ability to provide objective feedback to our clients without putting their personal opinion into the report. They are detail minded, organized, and conscientious. We look for people who are dependable and mature to work with us at Game Film® Consultants.
Does your company recognize MSPA certification? What advantage does a Silver shopper have over non-certified? Gold over Silver?
At Game Film® Consultants we recognize certified shoppers as “Go To” shoppers. We give them first chance at all of our shops before we will give them to non-certified shoppers. We do this because they have proven to be reliable, consistent, and thorough in their reporting and work.
What types of businesses does your company mystery shop?
Game Film® Consultants does work in 11 different industries. A great deal of our shops come from the retail, restaurant, and banking industries.
Are shoppers required to buy their own video equipment to do video mystery shops?
Our video scouts are employees of our company and we provide them with all of their equipment needed to perform video shops, and we train them in our corporate office in Austin, TX. Our written shoppers are independent contractors that we recruit through the MSPA and our scheduling company. Video scouts for our company are highly trained and full time employees for us.
What is the best way for a new shopper to get in the door and get a first assignment?
Register as a mystery shopper on our web site under the shopper tab. We will be happy to have you join our organization. Getting silver certified through the MSPA will also help you to get jobs faster with us.
How can shoppers qualify for your best shop assignments?
Get certified through the MSPA. We recognize gold and silver certified shoppers and give them the best and highest paying jobs first.
How long after a shop are your shoppers typically paid?
Game Film® Consultants pays their independent contractors on the 20th of each month for work completed the prior month.
How is your company helping shoppers deal with the high price of gasoline?
Gas prices are a major concern for shoppers at this time. We are offering bonuses to shoppers who are willing to “go that extra mile” (no pun intended). We value the service that shoppers provide us and understand that we need to make it worth their while.
What is your biggest problem/pet peeve with shoppers?
The biggest pet peeve that we have with shoppers is “flaking” on shops, close to the end of the month especially. So many of our projects are monthly projects, so if a shop is scheduled for the 29th and the shopper flakes on this shop, we are hard pressed to get it done for our clients. We pride ourselves on delivering 100% to our clients monthly, so when we fail to do this we are all very frustrated at Game Film®.
What are the biggest challenges facing mystery shopping companies today?
Some of the biggest challenges facing MSP’s today is growing their businesses in a very competitive market place during difficult economic times. Companies tend to want to tighten their belts when the economy is struggling, and Mystery Shopping is often times an easy budgetary cut out for them. We work hard to educate our clients to the fact that their customer service is even more vital during tough economic times. Every customer needs to have an exceptional experience so that Customer Loyalty is in play.
As shoppers for our organization it is even more important that the information you provide to these companies is accurate and valuable. This will help them to realize how valuable their shopping program is. The shops are only valuable if they are accurate and detailed, so shoppers can play an important role in this.
