Do Millionaires Mystery Shop?

March 2, 2020 by Cathy Stucker

You might think that the only people who mystery shop are those who need to make extra money. Believe it or not, it is not unheard of for people with significant income and assets to mystery shop, too. When you weigh the time and effort involved against the value of what you can receive on some mystery shops, it is definitely worthwhile to mystery shop. (Of course, this doesn’t apply to all shops. You have to decide how much your time is worth, what you are willing to do and for how much money.)

CNBC recently ran a story about a 27-year-old millionaire who saves 80% of his income. He refuses to spend money on dining out and entertainment when there are mystery shopper jobs to be had, if you have a business then you should be learning about how to use an online check stub maker.

Todd Baldwin nets over $300,000 a year (after business expenses, pre-tax) and he and his wife have a net worth of more than $1 million. They consider themselves to be “super frugal,” and they won’t spend money on many of the things that you might expect millionaires to splurge on. For example, they drive a 2009 Ford Focus and Todd wears a $12 rubber wedding band or any other affordable items found on the best online store.

He started mystery shopping in college, when he was first dating his wife. “I wanted to take her out, but I didn’t have any money,” he recalls. “So I started researching ways to get free food and free entertainment, and I found this thing called secret shopping.”

“To date, I’ve made just over $30,000 from secret shopping,” he says. “And the best part is, it’s all things that my wife and I would normally do anyway. We’re going to go out to dinner, we’re going to go out to the movies. Now, we’re just getting paid to do it.” That is what I have always said about mystery shopping: If I am going to do these things, I might as well let someone pay me to do them!

What do you think? Would you still mystery shop if you were a millionaire? What types of shops would you do? (For me, it is mostly restaurants.) Or if you are a millionaire mystery shopper, why do you do it? Leave a comment below and let us know what you think!

Give Yourself a Raise in Mystery Shopping

April 11, 2017 by Cathy Stucker

With a traditional job your boss decides how much you will earn. As a mystery shopper, you have more control over your earnings because you decide which assignments you will do, how many shops you will take on and how you will get your work done. With a few simple changes you can increase your profits and your hourly rate.

Here are some ideas that can help you be a more successful mystery shopper and give yourself a raise.

Use your non-shopping time effectively. If you start out looking at some job boards, then end up spending an hour or two absentmindedly reading some posts on a forum, you are not using your time effectively. Limit or eliminate non-productive activities. Set a timer. Have a procedure for reviewing job postings so that you do not waste a lot of time looking at listings that are not a good fit for you.

Mystery Shopper Route

September 19, 2013 by Cathy Stucker

The tip on the above video will save you time and money on your next round of mystery shops. One of the things that takes a lot of time on a mystery shop is driving back and forth to and from the location. And if you are doing several mystery shops, you certainly don’t want to leave the house, go to the shop, come back home, go to the next shop, come back home, etc.

So what a lot of mystery shoppers do is set up a route to go from home or office to mystery shop, mystery shop, mystery shop and then back to home. Another way you can do that is instead of setting up a route of mystery shops, just work your mystery shops in with your other errands. If you are going to the bank, the post office, the mall, or wherever else during the course of the day, why not do some mystery shops along the way? Make a little money while you’re running around town.

The problem with doing any kind of route, though, is figuring out the most efficient way to travel from place to place. Because, generally speaking, you have to sit down with a map or with your GPS and try to figure out the best way to get there.

Secret Shopper Resolutions

February 8, 2012 by Cathy Stucker

Did you make any New Year’s resolutions this year? How many of them have you kept so far? Uh-oh. Maybe it is time to make a few simple resolutions that can make you a more successful mystery shopper this year. Why not give some of these a try?

Communicate more. Mystery shopping companies want shoppers to keep them informed. Let them know if there is a problem scheduling an appointment or something goes wrong on the shop visit or a location no longer exists or… One shopper told me that she discovered a major problem with the scenario for a shop: Shoppers were supposed to tell the salesperson the amount of their budget, and there was nothing in the store for anything close to that price. Oops. Letting them know about the error immediately helped them fix the problem before other shoppers did their assignments.
